WFAC 2012: A Letter To Momo
Miyaura Momo is a young girl who grew up in a big city, and whose life has been shattered by her father's recent death and her family's decision to move from Tokyo back to her mother's ancestral home in a distant fishing village on a remote island. Here, time seems to have stopped: old wooden buildings, holy shrines surrounded by trees, terraced fields painstakingly carved out from steep hills and no shopping mall. Most of all, her heart is still feeling uneasy about an unfinished letter her father left behind a letter that contained only two words: "Dear Momo"
What was Dad going to say?
One day, exploring the attic of her house, Momo finds an ancient book and from that moment, strange happenings start occurring all around her
Twelve years after his triumphant first film JIN-ROH: THE WOLF BRIGADE (WFAC 2001 Selection), Okiura Hiroyuki has returned to hand-craft another masterpiece. Similar to his first film, A LETTER TO MOMO was long in production (seven years in this case), animated and drawn by hand with only a smattering of digital effects. Okiura-san also wrote and produced MOMO, creating a film that is nuanced and rich with character and atmosphere. It is perhaps ironic that the former protégé of Oshii Mamoru may yet be the true inheritor of the torch that Miyazaki Hayao and Takahata Isao held high at Studio Ghibli.
