WFAC 2012: Wolf Children
A young college student named Hana falls in love with a man with an unspeakable secret: he is a wolf man, and one of the last of his kind. Their love gives birth to two children Yuki (snow), born on a day of snow; and Ame (rain), born on a day of rain; they, too, were born both human and wolf.
To hide the fact that Yuki and Ame are wolf children, the family lives discreetly in a quiet corner of the city, simply but full of joy. Then one day, everything shatters. The father dies, leaving Hana to struggle to raise Yuki and Ame on her own.
Written and directed by Hosoda Mamoru, the director of THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME (WFAC 2006 selection) and SUMMER WARS (WFAC 2010 selection), WOLF CHILDREN is a heartwarming slice-of-life film that anime seems to do best. Having explored "coming of age" and "marriage" respectively in his previous two films, Hosoda-san tackles with a gentle yet strong touch the parent-child relationship, the travails of parenthood, the quest for self-identity, and the ache to belong. Hosoda-san took the greatest risk with this film, and his continuing development as a storyteller makes him someone to watch very closely.
About Hosoda Mamoru
After gaining experience as an animator, Hosoda-san switched fields and became a director, creating SUPERFLAT MONOGRAM for Louis Vuitton's 2003 spring/summer collection. He then turned freelance and released THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME in 2006, for which he won numerous awards. Commercial and critical success continued with his next film SUMMER WARS, released in 2009. WOLF CHILDREN is his third film.
