The Obama Impact: The Presidency, Campaigns and News in 21st-Century America
Barack Obama burst into the national spotlight in summer 2004 with a dramatic speech at the Democratic National Convention. At the time, he was a state legislator in Illinois. Four years later he was President of the United States, and in 2016 he completed a two-term presidency. Time will tell about the long-term policy implications of Obama's time in the White House. But significant impacts are crystal clear in two vital areas of U.S. public life: presidential campaigning and news coverage. Obama's rise and presidency produced responses and catalyzed trends in these areas that defined the 2016 presidential campaign and stand as key challenges for American democracy in the 21st century. This lecture series will address these new realities in the U.S. political arena.
