Performing a unique fusion and blending of traditions, cultures and genres in a world of ever-expanding global communication and exchange.

Hassan Hakmoun is one of the most notable artists in contemporary Moroccan music. Schooled in the deeply traditional sounds of the Gnawa people, his music has absorbed elements from a range of styles -- jazz, "world music", neo-classical, contemporary Western music and cerebral pop -- since moving to the US in 1987 and has evolved into a diverse, award-winning and critically acclaimed body of work.

Hakmoun's music origins are rooted in the African folk music of the Islamic Gnawa, descendants of West African slaves brought to North Africa several hundred years ago. Their music combines complex West African syncopations with long, sinuous North African melodies. Gnawa musicians usually express their religious devotions through their music, using it to enter into spiritual, trance states.

Hakmoun has participated and performed in a score of renowned arts festivals, such as World Music, Arts and Dance Festival (WOMAD) and collaborated with a number of respected artists, such as David Sanborn, Peter Gabriela and the Kronos Quartet.
