ABOUT THE PLAY
ProyectoTeatro has the pleasure of collaborating with FormasenAudioenMovimiento to bring Manos de Mariposa (Butterfly Hands) to the Austin stage for one weekend only. The play, written and directed by Spanish playwright Domingo Ferrandis, explores whats occurring in present-day Mexico, while emphasizing the similarities that are happening around the world. Horrifying news that doesnt seem to stop and with such speed that it creates immunity to the worlds pain.

Manos de Mariposa challenges the duality of the media who live off morbid happenings and feed off of the bad, while ignoring the beautiful; in this case, Mexico. Like the day Nadia Vera and Ruben Vera were killed, along with three other women, and this dynamic creeped up yet again: The world did not hear thunderous sounds of just a few that were loud enough to cross borders while birthing pain inside of those who spoke out. No one heard the hospitable country in solidarity that walked the streets in defense of human rights and liberties, that country which creates culture, science and art every single day.

This play confronts two realities; the memory of a place and the personal journey of those who live there. The relationship between these concepts are drawn out on stage by exploring both ends of the spectrum; the macro: roots, society, culture, politics, and activism. The micro: infancy, identity, relationships, fears, and struggles. Conceptualized from the idea that these two worlds cannot exist independently, Manos de Mariposa fuses in one story, two  experiences: The legend of a land in time, Mexico, and the biography of one man, Marcos.
