Contes féeriques: Art Books and Histories. Shahadat Publication launch and reading.
This program is part of ArteEast's 2012 series Making the Real: Practices of Documentation. In schools throughout Lebanon, local history is simply not taught. A nation's history has been fervently fought over by politicians who seek to manage society's understanding of the past in order to control the present and future iterations of the country. Mary Choueiter's artist book, Contes féeriques poses a parable of Lebanese history pieced together from memory and casts a multitude of animals in allegorical roles. In doing so she offers a new method for narrating Lebanese history by subverting her role as an authoritative voice and instead casting her story as prone to inconsistencies and rife with doubt. Choueiter's project extends the trajectory begun by leading Lebanese artists like Rabih Mroue and Walid Raad, who utilize the form of the lecture-performance, coupled with visual art to restage Lebanese history. The launch event celebrates the digital publication of her artist book and features a reading, which will be conducted in arabic, alongside media projections. A conversation will follow featuring Choueiter with artist and curator, Maddy Rosenberg.
