Elements Contemporary Ballet presents threepieces in downtown Chicago
Elements Contemporary Ballet returns to Chicago's newly renovated Studebaker Theater with threepieces, an evening of invigorating ballet repertory.
Beginning at 7:30 PM, the performance includes the World Premiere of Zodiac, a new work by Elements founder and artistic director, Mike Gosney. Featuring ethereal and atmospheric music by Halcyon Fields, David Lang, Grace Davidson and Max Richter, Zodiac draws inspiration from Gosney's background in astrology, which has informed his approach to dance since Elements' founding. The choreography in this 20-minute work depicts the circle of life, defined by Gosney as a "spiraling dream within a dream."
In contrast to the expansive Zodiac, The Misfortunate Beauty of Joe Danek offers an intimate and honest glimpse into the complex relationships of three same-sex lovers as they move into and out of each other's lives. At once poignant and humorous, this work by 2016 Princess Grace Choreography Fellow James Gregg is set to the quirky and infectious music of folk musician Chris Garneau.
threepieces concludes with The River, a fluid new work by Elements co-founder Joseph Caruana set to the songs of Ugandan artist Geoffrey Oryema. At once rhapsodic and gracefully controlled, Caruana's work consists of four vignettes that chronicle the ongoing human struggle with change.
The Studebaker Theatre is located on the first floor of the historic Fine Arts Building at 410 S. Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60605. Doors open at 7:00 PM. Tickets are $30 General Admission and $25 for Students/Seniors.
