AEG OR Chapter (FIELD TRIP) - April 29, 2017, Central Oregon Coast Range
The Oregon Chapter of the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists will be hosting a one-day field trip on Saturday April 29, 2017 to the Tyee Formation Paleo-landslides and highway construction in the Central Oregon Coast Range.
The field trip will demonstrate: (a) highway realignment has provided insight into landslides within the Tyee Formation; (b) geologic and geotechnical methods used to investigate, measure, and analyze the landslide conditions; and (c) construction techniques employed to minimize potential for reactivating the landslides.
Contemporary paleo-landslide terrain extends 100 to 400 acres. Radiocarbon tests indicate some of the slides are older than the testing range, and investigation suggests they have experienced Holocene, Pleistocene, and possibly Pliocene activity. The oldest landslide terrain contains slides that were broader than the existing landforms.
Our guides for this field trip will be Michael Tardif of the Oregon Dept of Transportation and Charlie Hammond of Cornforth Consultants.
* AEG will be renting vans for the field trip. There will be two meeting locations to carpool from: Portland State University (PSU) and the ODOT office in Corvallis, Oregon. Departure from PSU will be 7:00 am, and from ODOT will be 8:30 am (depending on traffic). The planned return time is 5:30 pm (for PSU). Due to limited space at the stops, additional vehicles will not be permitted.
