HOW TO PUPPET: WITH TOM MCGEE
Love the Muppets? Sesame Street? Avenue Q? Nows your chance to learn how to make them! From acclaimed puppet company Shakey-Shake and Friends comes this unique workshop where youll learn to build and manipulate a basic puppet character, in the tradition of the Muppets!
On day one, well use some basic supplies to create a brand new character, one that you design and build (well be creating a fully functioning mouth and a half head using techniques that can be expanded into a full puppet build) and then on day two, learning the basics of puppeteering to learn to manipulate your puppet.
By the end of the workshop, youll have a basic, working knowledge of how to use rod and mouth (Muppet-style) puppets, as well as an understanding of the design and construction of puppets. And youll have your very own training puppet character to take home.
Construction Skills:
- Learn to design a puppet based on a character you envision
- Adapt your ideal design to the limitations of the puppet
- Design and construct a functional puppet mouth and face
- Learn the basics of further design (body, etc)
Performance Skills:
- Learn the fundamentals of puppet manipulation
- Practice specific key skills such as puppet focus and animation
- Learn to create a character that matches your design and the puppet itself
- Develop a physicality that suits your specific puppet
Who We Are:
Tom McGee is the co-creator, artistic director, writer, and lead performer of Shakey-Shake and Friends, the critically acclaimed puppet Shakespeare company based in Toronto, Ontario. Their shows have played to sold-out houses, schools, and libraries, and garnered many awards such as Best of FringeKids since their inception in 2009. Tom is also the co-founder of Theatre Brouhaha and has worked with Kat Sandler on all of her scripts as dramaturge, producer, and often co-creator, including Punch Up, which played at the HAT in 2015. Tom is also a playwright, director (currently: The (Curious Case of the) Watson Intelligence which opens in April at the HAT, previously All in the Timing, at the HAT Feb 2016, Romeo and Juliet...A Puppet Epic, Hamlet...A Puppet Epic at the Royal Ontario Museum), actor, puppeteer, and puppet builder. He holds a Master of Arts from the University of Toronto in Theatre and a BAH from Queens University in theatre and classics.
