"Walkin' Talkin' Bill Hawkins . . .In Search of My Father"
The Marsh presents "Walkin' Talkin' Bill Hawkins. . .In Search of My Father." Written and performed by W. Allen Taylor, this one-man show recalls Taylor's adventurous search for his father, Bill Hawkins, the first black disc jockey in Cleveland, Ohio. With musical interludes celebrating the cultural legacy of black radio, "Walkin' Talkin'" follows a bittersweet journey of self-discovery and destiny.
Taylor, a professional actor who has appeared on Broadway and is currently a drama instructor at the College of Marin, grew up in Cleveland. Raised by his mother and grandparents, his mother did not reveal his father's identity until his college graduation party. "I sometimes will sit back and daydream about being a kid and possibly listening to my father without even knowing it. It's very possible. I was tuned into radio at a very young age," said Taylor in a 1999 Oaland Tribune article. As a work in progress, Taylor's one-man show and his search for his father was featured on National Public Radio's "Lost and Found Sound" series.
