The David Amram Quartet
David Amram is the Renaissance Man of American Music. (Boston Globe)
As a multi-instrumental musician who plays more than 35 instruments, David Amram introduced (along with Julius Watkins) the French horn to Jazz more than sixty years ago while a member of the bands of many of the 1950s jazz legends, such as Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Charles Mingus, and Oscar Pettiford. By 1957, he had formed the David Amram quartet. Along his musical path, he has also developed friendships and shared stages and/or recordings with many other jazz legends, such as Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams, Charlie Parker, Betty Carter, Stan Getz, Earl `Fatha' Hines, Miles Davis, Gerry Mulligan, Nina Simone, Lester Young, Dave Brubeck, Paul Desmond, Arturo Sandoval, Paquito d'Rivera, Candido, Ray Mantilla, Los Papines, Mongo Santamaria, Tito Puente, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Thad Jones, Pepper Adams, Kenny Dorham, Sonny Rollins, and Wynton Marsalis.

On March 9, 2017, David was honored with the Highlights In Jazzs Lifetime Achievement Award at New Yorks Tribeca Performing Arts Center, where Davids quartet was joined in the concert celebration on stage by his friends Paquito dRivera, Bobby Sanabria, Norman Simmons, Earl McIntyre and Renee Manning. And, three week earlier, the multi-musical genre Amram, was honored in Kansas City, with the Folk Alliance International Lifetime Achievement Award at their annual conference.
In conjunction with the Highlights in Jazz award, Moochin About Records in England, which specializes in Jazz On Film CD box sets honoring the film soundtracks of great jazz artists/composers, such as Duke Ellington, Chet Baker, Charles Mingus, Lester Young, and Andre Previn will be releasing in North America the 5 CD Box Set of DAVID AMRAMs Classic American Film Scores (1956-2016) in April 2017, which includes seven of his film scores, including John Frankenheimers The Manchurian Candidate and The Young Savages; Elia Kazans Splendor in the Grass and The Arrangement; and Jack Kerouacs Pull My Daisy, plus the scores from two of his Broadway plays, Arthur Millers After the Fall, and Budd Schulbergs On the Waterfront.

Meanwhile, Amram has also conducted 75 of the worlds great symphony orchestras, composed more than 100 orchestral and chamber music works, 2 operas, 23 Broadway scores, and 24 film scores. He's ranked as one of the 20 most performed American classical composers of the last 50 years; and in North America, he is regarded as the "Father of World Music." Other musical collaborations include: Leonard Bernstein, Bob Dylan, Jack Kerouac, Willie Nelson, Odetta, Steve Martin, Pete Seeger, Dustin Hoffman, Eugene Ormandy, Richie Havens, Allen Ginsberg, Sir James Galway, Joe Papp, Paddy Chayefsky, John McEuen, Dimitri Metropoulos, Aaron Copland, Archibald MacLeish, Vassar Clements, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and Johnny Depp.
Amram is also the author of the books, Vibrations, a memoir; Upbeat: Nine Lives of a Musical Cat, an autobiography; and Offbeat: Collaborating with Kerouac. His forthcoming memoir David Amram: The Next 80 Years! will be published in 2018 by Routledge Publishers. He has also written Forewords to biographies on his friends Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger,
and Maurice Peres. As an author and public speaker, he has lectured around the world in five languages on a variety of artistic, multi-cultural and ethnic subjects for which he is considered an expert. Among Amrams close friends from the literary world included George Plimpton, Norman Mailer, Terry Southern, Hunter Thompson, Buck Henry, Kurt Vonnegut, and Frank McCourt.
Previously, David has been inducted in the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame, while also being honored with their "Jay McShann Lifetime Achievement Award" for his sixty years as a jazz pioneer. In 2013, he received the "Bruce Richter Lifetime Achievement Award" in recognition for his six decades of film composing; and the "Pete & Toshi Seeger Power of Song Award" for his lifetime of using music to heal the world. Andrew Zuckermans book and film Wisdom: The Greatest Gift One Generation Can Give To Another, features David as one of the Worlds 50 Elder Thinkers and Doers.
Larry Kramans feature length film documentary, David Amram: the First 80 Years was released in 2015; as was the CD live recording of Amram's THIS LAND: Symphonic Variations on a Song by Woody Guthrie, which he conducted with the 88 piece Colorado Symphony Orchestra.
