Presentation and Tour of the Saddleback College INTERDISCIPLINARY SCIENCES BUILDING Presentation and Tour: Envisioned as a state-of-the-art science teaching and research laboratory the building was designed to reflect the high aspirations of this award-winning, forward-thinking science program. The facility houses teaching and research laboratories, with specialized labs for physical sciences, life sciences and chemistry occupying each of its three floors. With shared support, office, teaching and meeting spaces woven between labs, the building is situated near a steep hillside at the intersection between the lower and upper campus. The building is certified LEED Gold
Learning Objectives:
*Attendees will learn about energy efficiency in higher education buildings
*Attendees will learn about environmental standards for LEED Gold rated education facilities
*Attendees will experience and learn about water reduction for public buildings mandated by the State of California due to severe drought conditions
*Attendees will learn about sustainable design features within science teaching facilities

Brian Dougherty, FAIA, LEED AP is a Senior Partner at Dougherty Architects, specializing in the planning and design of contemporary educational, institutional, commercial, military, and health care facilities. Mr. Dougherty contributes over 40 years of experience in providing architectural services to projects. He brings a career-long emphasis in energy conservation and sustainable design to each project, including a focus on holistic resource conservation that is shared with clients, community members, and other professionals through his lectures and presentations. He recently completed 12 years of service as a practicing architect member of the Board of the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS). His Credentials in this area have led to his role as a spokesperson for the architectural profession in State and National dialogue on the subject. Mr. Dougherty has dedicated his professional career to leadership within his professional society. He is currently serving as a California Regional Representative to the National AIA Strategic Advisory Council and has also served the American Institute of Architects as: President of the AIA California Council in 2014, a member of the AIA Fellows Jury from 2013 to 2015, and Chair of the AIA National Ethics Council in 2005 (completing a six-year tenure). His service to the AIA over the years at the Local, State and National levels has included California Architectural Foundation Trustee, Board member and then Secretary of the AIA California Council, Council Regional Director to the National AIA Board from 1992 - 1995 and 2000, and National Secretary from 1996 to 1998. As a member of the AIA Regional and Urban Design Committee/PIA, Brian participated in several Regional Urban Design Assistant Teams. He has served AIACC as a member of the Capitol Forum, and continues to serve his Chapter in an advisory capacity.
