Neu Reekie #26 at The Poetry Club
Michael Pedersen and Kevin Williamson present you with a delicious picnic of spoken word, animation and music - ripe and luscious.

Readers: LIZ LOCHHEAD - TAM DEAN-BURN.
Music: REMEMBER REMEMBER (solo) and LEO CONDIE (and Band)
Animation Showcase: WILL ANDERSON

Post a packed out inaugural, this is show number two for Neu! Reekie! at The Poetry Club and one of oor most splendiferous line-ups to date.

The Poetry Club has been deliberated and designed by the artist Jim Lambie and lies on the doorstep of SWG3 - it's a right gift to Glasgow.

INFO:

LIZ LOCHHEAD: was appointed Scots Makar  the National Poet for Scotland  in 2011 (succeeding Edwin Morgan), Liz is both transgressive and hugely popular; she's a prolific poet and playwright. In the early 1970s she joined Philip Hobsbaum's writers' group, a crucible of creative activity - other members were Alasdair Gray, James Kelman and Tom Leonard. Her plays include Blood and Ice, Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off (1987), Perfect Days (2000) and a highly acclaimed adaptation into Scots of Molière's Tartuffe (1985). Her poetry, like her work for theatre, is alive with vigorous speech idioms; collections include Memo For Spring (1972), True Confessions and New Clichés (1985), Bagpipe Muzak (1991) and Dreaming Frankenstein: and Collected Poems (1984) and most recently The Colour of Black & White: poems 1984-2003 (Edinburgh: Polygon, 2003) and a Choosing (Edinburgh: Polygon, 2011).

TAM DEAN BURN - Tam's a born and bred Leither and screen and stage powerhouse; with a catalogue that includes Irvine Welsh's Acid House, Taggart and River City. That plus he's the audio book raconteur of Trainspotting, Filth, Skagboys and others. Add into that being lead singer in The Bum-Clocks and a string of National Theatre of Scotland performances and you've quite the ferociously prolific board treader. Somehting tells me we're going to see a bit of the Bertolt Brecht in him on this occasion.

ANIMATION SHOWCASE by:

WILL ANDERSON, presenting THE MAKING OF LONGBIRD. Winner of Best Animation Brooklyn Film Festival, WinnerShort Film Award Glasgow Film Festival, Winner Short Grand Prix Warsaw Film Festival and MANY More. Extract Here: http://vimeo.com/25431910

MUSIC

LEO CONDIE is the frontman with The Low Miffs (who released their album with Malcolm Ross, Malcolm Ross And The Low Miffs, in 2009) and star of Sylvain Chomet's Oscar-nominated The Illusionist. He has now gleefully embraced the melodrama he threatened in the days of leaping around on stages, and begun singing, yelping and shouting from the warped, visceral ouevre of Brel, Brecht, Bowie and, er, B... Others. May even belt out a few The Low Miffs originals, sprinkled amongst the ditties about funerals, war, and dismay. The band will feature at least two forms of brass instrument, some stringed instruments, at least one woodwind instrument and some musicians. Don't sit near the front or you will get covered in the spittle of righteousness (please sit near the front, it's fine).

REMEMBER REMEMBER is the musical brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Graeme Ronald. Initially begun as a purely solo endeavour, which featured Graeme utilising both traditional and abstract instrumentation (wind-up gizmos, toy sharks and the like) all fed through a huge bank of effects and loop pedals. His individual, unique sound and eager sense of invention caught the interest of Mogwai, who signed Graeme to their Rock Action label (and for a short time invited Graeme into their touring line-up). The first self-titled Remember Remember album was released in November 2008. More collaborators were slowly added throughout the following year and by the end of 2009 Remember Remember had evolved into the 7-piece band it is today. The first fruits of this new, expanded line-up (Graeme, James Swinburne, Joseph Quimby, Tommy Stuart, Joanne Murtagh, Andy Brown and Steven Kane) were to be heard on 2010's 12" ep "RR Scorpii", recorded once again at Green Door. A new-found rhythmic and melodic confidence is brought to bear on anthemic opener "Lips", whilst "Ghost Frequency" finds the band taking cues from kosmische music and even the more operatic, ostentatious elements of prog rock. With this fresh wind of invention billowing their sails, Remember Remember have created "The Quickening", their most defining work to date. They've been rewarded with glowing reviews and invitations to share the stage with bands and artists like Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian and Yann Tiersen and were nominated for Scottish Album of the Year.
