Spiritual Activism/Activation and the Saints
Devotion to numerous Saints dates back hundreds of years in Mexican culture. Rituals, myths, and beliefs by indigenous communities post colonization era remain a rich part of the people's practice. Reliance on various Saints is a part of a complex cultural fabric that holds a delicate balance between modern Catholicism and Indigenous practices.
Growing up with the guidelines of Catholicism and Mexican culture comes with a specific flavor of spiritualism that is rooted in our indigenous beliefs, and devotion that is veiled in Christian faith. In this workshop we will discuss ways our spirituality has been influenced by colonization and how to reconcile, reclaim, and begin rebuilding our direct connection to our ancestors.
Attendees will partake a pop-ed style discussion and knowledge share. We will work together to build an Altar, call in to our Ancestors, and give thanks to our lineage in a circle. Food offerings and some ritual practice will take place.
Anyone interested in learning about Saints from a de-colonizing framework is welcome to attend.
Please let instructor know if you have any food allergies.
Bio: letty, a mexica folk herbalist and community health educator has been working on self decolonization over the past 5 years. After nearly 2 decades in public health and social justice rooted work in NGOs, they are excited to work with community more directly. First generation mexica/mestizx, letty has been working to uncover and reclaim lost and withheld cultural rites/rights through exploring current practice and research of ancestral practices. They are working towards living socially by reconnecting to self, nature, as well as relations through self exploration and community engagement. They hope to rebuild and share with other folks who are in varying stages of their own process of decolonization. Tlazokamati. ---
