New to Networking: A Workshop on Finding Jobs, Finding Friends, and Finding Safe(r) Spaces to Strut Your Stuff
Entering a scene as a new and/or emerging artist can be really intimidating, especially when it seems like everyone is more experienced and connected than you; for marginalized artists, simply making connections and finding supportive spaces can be particularly challenging. Casual and judgement-free, this workshop will guide new and emerging artists through the process of networking from start to finish. You will leave this workshop with the skills to build a network of other artists, tips on how to find and create respectful and inclusive spaces, a concrete list on where to find those spaces, and (hopefully) some new connections to help you on your way. Beginners (obviously) welcome; introverts also welcome.
This workshop is the fifth in a series of five Artist Education workshops -- a new collaboration between Patrick's Cabaret and Soo Visual Arts Center (SooVAC), intended to create collaborative space for artists to share their skills with fellow artists and organizers, to strengthen relationships and build resilience.
This workshop is led by Ollie Schminkey, a white, non-binary transgender poet/musician/artist. They facilitate, direct, and host many organizations, including a queer open mic called OUTspoken! and a weekly writing workshop called Well-Placed Commas. They have also represented the Twin Cities in numerous national poetry competitions, and they have authored one chapbook, The Taste of Iron. You can find them touring nationally or in the We Will Be Shelter, Drunk in a Midninght Choir, and 20% Theater Co's The Naked I. For more check out ollieschminkey.com or Button Poetry.
