The Journey to Non-BPA Technology and the Food Packaging Industry
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a widely-used compound which has received much attention in recent years. Studies have demonstrated its potential to disrupt human health, especially in fetal and early childhood development. Monitoring shows it in the bodies of 95% of Americans, and as one of the most frequently detected unregulated contaminants in Minnesotas environment.
Among many other products, BPA has been used in various types of resins and coatings, including the linings of food and beverage cans and bottle lids. Leading companies in those industries have been searching for safer alternatives to BPA-based linings for several years. Some alternatives are now in use, but the search is still on for replacements which work across the range of container storage challenges especially acidic foods and drinks and at the low price and high versatility sought by the industry and its suppliers.
Come hear the story of how a Minnesota company Valspar, based in Minneapolis tackled this challenge in a unique way, producing a new option which they have worked hard with stakeholders to demonstrate as a safer alternative to BPA-based linings.
