Who Knows Five? What Every Jewish Educator, Hazzan, and Rabbi Should Know About the Learning Brain
Over the past thirty years, neuroscientists have made some remarkable discoveries about how the brain learns. This session will illustrate some of the most important of these findings and how you can apply them directly to your teaching, whether you work with religious school children, Bnai Mitzvah students or adult learners.
We will explore:
The optimum ways to organize instructional time approaches that make lessons dynamic and memorable the role of the learning environment the power of the senses working and long-term memory, storage, and retrieval how art, music, and movement can enhance learning beyond the level of simple remembering to understanding how to use knowledge creatively. Dina Maiben is the Acting Director of Gratz Advance (the department that addresses supplementary Jewish education). She also serves as Hebrew Program Coordinator of Gratz College, where she teaches Hebrew and education courses, including the Principles of Brain-Based Learning.
Dina Maiben has worked extensively in both formal and informal Jewish educational settings. These include: Religious School Director, classroom teacher, youth director, camp counselor, program director, and consultant. She was the founding chair of Monmouth Countys Commission on Jewish Education. Dina has authored twenty-one books and more than two dozen journal articles and stories. Nationally recognized for her work in the area of Hebrew reading instruction, her Hebrew primer, Alef Bet Quest, won the Association of Educational Publishers Distinguished Achievement Award for World Language in 2010, the first Hebrew book to be so honored.
Dina holds an M.A. in Jewish Studies and an Advanced Certificate in Jewish Education from Gratz College and is currently a doctoral candidate in education at Gratz College.
