American Modern Dance Legacy - STUDENT SHOWING
It's best to RSVP for this event, seats are limited.
The Sokolow Theatre Dance Ensemble invites you to a showing on April 28th at 7:00 PM at Gibney Dance Center, to experience the modern dance legacy. In one evening you will see works by American choreographers Isadora Duncan, Doris Humphrey, Charles Weidman, Anna Sokolow, and Rae Ballard of Thoughts in Motion Dance.
One of the missions of The Sokolow Ensemble is to train future performers through classes taught by master teachers and interactive performances. Students of Ms. Samantha Geracht, the newly appointed Artistic Director of the Sokolow Ensemble, will perform Anna Sokolow Unanswered Question, along with excerpts and studies of the Sokolow style. Students from classes taught by Ms. Gail Corbin, renowned teacher of the Humphrey-Weidman technique, will perform excerpts from dances by Charles Weidman and Doris Humphrey.
The culmination of these classes will be this showing. In sharing these dances with you, the students understanding of these works will be deepened and the traces of these dances, though fragile and temporary in nature, will live on in the minds of the viewers and the muscle-memory of the performers.
You have a priceless opportunity to see, for the first time, Isadora Duncan choreography and Charles Weidman choreography intertwined in a suite of Brahms Waltzes. And, rounding out the evening will be a premiere of a new work by Rae Ballard, whose work resonates in the present while being rooted in classic American modern dance.
This showing is a part of Gibney Dance's POP series, a program supporting curated rental opportunities for the dance community.
