PIERRE GONNORD - Arraigados
Pierre Gonnord's exhibit Rooted is comprised of portraits of Asturian miners that invite the viewer to connect with the strength of the human condition.
Pierre Gonnord has been photographing miners from seven Spanish coal mines for the past five years. In order to get a sense of the miners experience, Gonnord accompanied the miners on their seven-hour shifts in the cramped, dark tunnels up to 2,300 ft. below ground. The resulting portraits are a powerful celebration of human dignity. Gonnord makes his subjects the protagonists of his exhibits by photographing only their faces without capturing any other background images, in this way emphasizing the footprint of time on their skins.
The self-taught French photographer, who resides in Madrid, has shown his work in Spain as well as in Portugal, the United States and France. In 2015, received the International Photography Award from Ciudad de Alcobendas, one of the most prestigious photography awards in Spain.
