Sophisticated Ladies
The Sophisticated Ladies Swing & Latin Jazz quartet is a collective of women musicians. They breathe new life into the American and French standards we love from the golden era of the 1930's to the 1950s.
The Sophisticated Ladies will take you on a world tour with the harmonic richness of the compositions of the early composers, all the while marrying the compositions with rhythms from North and South America, the Caribbean, and Africa, which simply give one a desire to get up and dance.
"This is the band you wish would take up residence at your favorite hotel bar so you could see them all the time. Loaded with the kind of joie de vivre you wish you could get injected, this is the kind of jazzbo break you've been waiting for. Killer stuff." ~Chris Spector, Midwest Record (Oct. 8 2012)
Rachael Magidson from San Francisco is on drums as well as playing a little trumpet and guitar.
Magidson is one of those song stylists that pretty much has her way with you emotionally. You could easily succumb to a state of bewitched, bothered bewilderment(Jazz Music Review)
Rachael was thrown directly in deep water and has no formal musical training. Being from a musical family she was hired right out of high school to play washtub bass in her brothers jug band touring throughout western Europe. After a few years working as sideman on drums, percussion and back up vocals, she began forming her own groups and singing lead as well as playing trumpet. It is her love of singing harmony that led her to form the Sophisticated Ladies Vocal Trio with two other singers.
Paola Vera (London) is on piano. Paola has a masters in Jazz and brings to the trio her fluency in scat singing .
Singer/songwriter/pianist Paola Vera is already being described as a truly gifted improviser (Pete Churchill) and a Jazz chick with hits (Richard Niles) .
In 2007 Paola was awarded a Yamaha Jazz Award for outstanding young Jazz musicians for Jazzwize magazine as well as best accompanist in the Finsterwalde Pop and Jazz competition Germany, best improvisation and 2nd place in Lithuania at the International Jazz Vocalist Competition.
Laure Sancho (Bordeaux) is the youngest member of the group. She plays upright bass. Her groove is solid ! After only five years of playing upright bass she has already won the blue note prize in the Action Jazz competition with her own trio and compositions, and is playing festivals and clubs
"Laure Sancho has a fresh sound full of groove and musicality " Philippe Desmond Action Jazz.
Laure SANCHO is a name you will see a lot more of in the coming years.
The Ladies most recent work is a Tribute to GERSHWIN .
