The Music Festival is pleased to present the return of duo musicians, Peggy Lyon on piano and Gregory Dufford on clarinet. The duo will play a program of works by American composers, three of which are still living (Sargon, Rokeach and Miller). As a tenured member of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra from 1980 to 1998, Gregory performed with many of the worlds finest opera singers, including Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Kiri Te Kanawa, Montserrat Caballé, Mirella Freni, and many others. Mr. Duffords performing experience went well beyond the opera stage to include 13 years as Principal Clarinetist with one of Americas most respected contemporary music ensembles, the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players (SFCMP). Mr. Dufford also served as Adjunct Faculty teaching clarinet at San Francisco State University and Stanford University, both for 15 years. As a woodwind doubler, Mr. Dufford performed with such notable jazz and pop artists as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Linda Ronstadt, Sarah Vaughan, Manhattan Transfer, Nelson Riddle, Burt Bacharach, Rosemary Clooney, Mel Torme, Lena Horne and many others. Mr. Dufford holds a Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts in Clarinet Performance from San Francisco State University. From 2000 to 2015, Mr. Dufford served on the music faculty of Metropolitan State University of Denver where he was Professor of Clarinet, Woodwind Area Coordinator, and taught courses ranging from Music Appreciation to Woodwind Techniques and Pedagogy. Now retired, Gregory Dufford is focusing his time performing clarinet recitals and collaborations in chamber music. Peggy Lyon is a concert pianist whose playing has been described as radiating beauty and an inner intensity of feeling which is simply overwhelming. She has performed solo recitals in Austria, Peru, and major cities in the western United States, and has given world premieres of works by David Baker, Eugene Kurz and Istvan Hornyak. She has also performed concertos with orchestras in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, in Pullman, Washington, and in Denver, Golden, and Evergreen, Colorado. Lyon has recorded ten solo CDs and five duo CDs with clarinetist, Gregory Dufford. Her regular partners in duo music are Gregory Dufford, clarinetist, and Rodney Farrar, cellist. Peggy studied piano and voice at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. She has a Masters in piano performance from Washington State University and a Masters in voice performance from the University of Denver. Peggys award-winning specialty is giving concerts with commentary about the music and the composers. Her talks are informative and humorous, and they are unique for including outrageous pronouncements of critics.
