Singer, musician and actor Jim Byrnes has loved and played blues music since he was in his teens. Born and raised in St Louis, he grew up on the citys north side. As a teenager going to music clubs, he and his buddy were often the only white people in the place. Jim moved to Vancouver in the early 1970s, and soon became a key part of the local blues scene, and has remained so ever since. In recent years, he won a JUNO for his gospel project House of Refuge, rave reviews for My Walking Stick and was part of the Mississippi Sheiks Tribute project.
In 2004 Jim hooked up with Steve Dawson, one of North Americas most critically acclaimed roots music producers. Together they created five outstanding albums: 2004s Fresh Horses, 2006s Juno Award winning House Of Refuge, 2009s My Walking Stick, 2010s Everywhere West, a salute to Jims origins and influences, and 2012s I Hear The Wind In The Wires, an album of songs from the golden age of country music. Jim and Steve were back at it again in 2014 with St. Louis Times Byrnes most personal record to date.
As one of Canadas most sought after producers, session musicians and guitarists, Steve Dawson spends much of his time helping other songwriters and musicians bring their creative visions to life. As wonderful as these collaborations are, its when Dawson hunkers down in his Henhouse Studio to record his own music that he truly shines, and the 7 time Juno Award-winning (2 as artist, 5 as producer) artist has come up with something special this time around. Solid States and Loose Ends is a sublime set of new songs that play to all of Dawsons many musical strengths.
One magazine has referred to Steve Dawson as the T-Bone Burnett of Canada. I tend to think of him more as a Canadian version of Ry Cooder his fine slide guitar and storytelling, everything seeming to flow effortlessly. - Toledo Blade
