BOOK AND LYRICS BY GREG KOTIS
MUSIC AND LYRICS BY MARK HOLLMANN
DIRECTION by DARIUS PIERCE MUSICAL DIRECTION BY MONT CHRIS HUBBARD CHOREOGRAPHY BY LIZ YOUNG
Winner of three Tony Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards, and two Obie Awards, URINETOWN is an earnest tale of love, greed and revolution. Our production will feature a variety of Portland performers and musicians on August 7, 2017 at the Gerding Theater in the Portland Center Stage Armory. As with all Anonymous productions, the performers will secretly rehearse alone and will reveal their identity the night of the show, to the audience AND their fellow cast members, when they speak their first line. In a truly one-of-a-kind event, performers, musicians, and audience members alike, will watch the secret unfold, at the same time, in this thrilling evening of theater.
In URINETOWN, written by Greg Kotis and Mark Hollmann, a terrible water shortage has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amidst the people, a hero emerges and decides he has had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom. The show first premiered at the Fringe Festival in 1999, and was an instant hit with fringe audiences. Word of mouth traveled quickly and the show was picked up for an Off-Broadway run in 2001. The reviews were wildly enthusiastic, and the show was transferred to Broadways Henry Miller Theater where the show opened on September 20, 2001. It was the first Fringe Festival show to achieve this feat!
According to Kotis, URINETOWN was created in a spirit of defiance against whats typically offered up as stage worthy in America today. The result is pure, hilarious, and innovative, parodying many popular musicals and theater conventions, while simultaneously poking fun at itself. It is rich with social commentary about the American economy, the division between rich and poor, and the way we abuse the environment. In today's horrifying political climate, URINETOWN is shockingly prescient in its satire.
