¡Ay Chihuahua!
Following up the successful production of El Bracero A Mariachi Opera. "¡Ay Chihuahua!" will be staged on Oxnard, Moorpark, and Ventura college campuses in 2017. The performance will take place on March 24th and 25th at 8 p.m. in Oxnard Colleges 400-seat Performing Arts Center. All ticket sales and sponsorships will be used to help raise funds for local college scholarships such as the Oxnard College Promise.
The musical play tells the story of a young man traveling from León, Guanajuato, México to the U.S. border whose life is transformed in the great state of Chihuahua. The play is set in the late 1960s during Mexicos golden era of Ranchera music and will feature special performances by Mariachi Aguilas de Oxnard and Ballet Folklorico Mestizo from Oxnard College. The play, which was written by Miguel Orozco, is performed in Spanish with English subtitles.
The first production "El Bracero - A Mariachi Opera" was a great success when performed in our colleges and we look forward with great anticipation to the premier of Ay Chihuahua! at Oxnard College on March 24th. The best accolade for the show is that it a great showcase for local talent in the cause of college scholarships, said Dr. Bernard Luskin, Chancellor for the Ventura County Community College District.
The cast and crew of ¡Ay Chihuahua! are home-grown talent, some of whom made their theatrical debut in El Bracero. Many are college students from the Ventura County Community College District.
¡Ay Chihuahua!" proudly celebrates Mexican culture and history. The current political environment depicts México in a negative manner. We want to help change the narrative with this dynamic play.
