DINNER & A MOVIE
This ticket is for the film only. Dinner is available for purchase from the Haley House Cafe menu.
The film explores the impact of this battle, which has manifested into a broader conflict about race, identity, and the sovereign rights of indigenous people.
Largely excised from American history, some Native American tribes owned African slaves. During the Civil War, many of these tribal nations sided with the Confederacy. After they lost, the Cherokee Nationamong other tribessigned a treaty with the Lincoln administration formalizing the tribal citizenship of its former slaves.
Nearly 140 years later, the Cherokee Nation began removing their African-American citizens. Among increasingly wealthy tribes, the Cherokee Nation is not alone, critics say, in disenfranchising citizens based on race. Today, the tribes continue to argue that their African-American citizens are not real Indians by blood. The film demonstrates both sides of the battle, the shared emotional impact of the issue, and the rising urgency of the debate.
