Sphelm, Russell Joslin and KITS
Sphelm
An acoustic/electronic crossover, laden with soundscapes, beautiful guitar and vocal harmonies, set within digital space. This will be our first ever live performance as a 4 piece with the introduction of ex Cyril Snear members Darryll Clarkson on bass guitar and Freddie Baker on synths and processed beats, playing songs from our debut album 'These Roots Know No Boundaries' out now on Bad Elephant Music
The whole album is not even close to the mainstream, it is off piste even for the Progressive but not in any dissonant way but in a way that the likes of Sigur Ros and Steven Wilson travel their own path - Prog Radar
Sphelm constantly evolve the sonic landscape, introducing more trumpet, deft swathes of synth work, complex, melodic guitars and considered vocal harmonies. In this case, the cliched difficult second album seems to have entirely failed to materialise. These Roots Know No Boundaries builds on a quality live experience and elevates itself to something distinctly more than their first release. This is a highly refined, well thought out melodic journey and one that distinctly deserves exploring. - Echoes & Dust
Russell Joslin
...living proof of how fresh, vigorous and abrasive an acoustic songwriter can and should be in the 21st Century.' Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music Explosive, hard hitting folk ... a much needed gust of fresh air into the British folk scene. - Subba-cultcha.com
Russell Joslin brings the tradition of the folk singer-songwriter into the 21st century with a new stridency; representing the new breed of socially engaged DIY wordsmiths with the non- industry ethics of punk and the musical elements of folk, seeking grass roots connections though a desire to create unique and confrontational music using old methods, thereby placing a ragged flag in the ground of UK music. In 2009 Joslins first bedroom-folk album Dream Token was received by the press as a much needed gust of fresh air into the British folk scene (Subba Cultcha) whilst his sophomore effort Jet Black And White (2011) led to national radio play on BBC radio and XFM.
When Sarah McCaig and Russell Joslin met in an east London flatshare in 2013 it was a meeting of souls which resulted in one of the most intriguing romantic duets on the London folk scene and marked Joslins return to the folk scene; ( the musical charge they generated together was truly electrifying Musicboxfolk.com). Sarah grew up in Melbourne, Australia, she progressed from lead vocalist in numerous musical theatre productions to singer in St.Kilda based rock bands. Her unique voice and melodically dissonant harmony style coupled with Joslins songwriting has been described as extreme folk at its best by Folkwords.com
So far in 2015 the duet have performed 3 tours of continental Europe, taking in Finland, Germany and Switzerland, FMM Sines World Music Festival in Portugal, Sark Folk Festival Lyme Regis Folk Weekend plus numerous high profile London dates including a November gig supporting Martha Tilston in Dalston and a further support slot at Londons prestigious Kings Place in March 2016.
KITS
KITS is the Manchester-based one-man folktronica project of Jayson Turner. KITS combines a laptop with melodic heartbreak-fuelled vocals. Since releasing his first single in 2013, KITS has played shows across the UK and received air play on BBC 6 Music. Jayson has his debut EP penned for 2017 to be released on Zzz! Recordings.
"The different sound textures and layers are neatly woven together and offer something of genuine quality, and also something that has clearly had a lot of thought put into it - Sound of Confusion Website http://musicbykits.co.uk
