Couperin Leçons de Ténèbres
François Couperins Leçons de ténèbres pour le mercredi saint (Tenebrae Lessons for Holy Thursday) were written for Holy Week 1714 at the royal abbey of Longchamp in the Bois de Boulogne, west of Paris, and published soon after. Often called Lamentations when set chorally by composers such as Tallis, Victoria, Lassus, and Gesualdo, the first three of the nine lessons from the service of Tenebrae are taken from the Book of Jeremiah the Prophet and are traditionally the only ones given elaborate musical settings. The original Hebrew text is translated into Latin for use in the Catholic liturgy; however, the lessons traditionally retain their Hebrew letter-name designations for each major section. D.
