Rigoletto

Rigoletto is another of Verdi's Mid-period masterpieces. It explores themes of lost innocence, revenge, and consequences. Gilda, a young girl, leaves her convent life to live with her father, Rigoletto, the court jester. Her child-like innocence and imagination is starkly contrasted with the world inhabited by the other characters.
Like any young person uncertain of his/her heritage she is quite fixated on names, both her own and that of the man she thinks she has met. The play can be read many ways, for me she frames her tragedy in the only way she knows how, through her upbringing in the church. Does Verdi intend to question religion as a means to deal with life? Well that is up to the listener. However, as a real life event, it is no surprise that she returns to childlike methods to cope. The ending is almost akin to suicide, and certainly relevant since it because of is something that statistically 1/4 women have dealt with at some point in their life.
Verdi addresses the issues of truth and denial, as well as the stages of grief in a way that few have since.

As always, these stories are accompanied by some of the world's great vocal music adding to the genius and compassion of the man, Verdi and of the Italian Operatic Tradition. ---Lizzie
