presented with the Southampton African American Museum Friday, September 8 | 7 pm | $25 Adults ($15 for Students)
"JD Lawrence sings, dances, and steals the show...Onstage, Lawrence is a prodigious theatrical talent." -Marcelle S. Fischler, New York Times
"JD Lawrence, the man of many faces." -Shirley Henderson, Ebony Magazine
New York Times Acclaimed playwright JD Lawrence brings to Southampton Arts Center a show that is not only educational, but entertaining. "JD Lawrence presents Harriet, Rosa and Me" is a thought provoking, inspiring, and witty theatrical presentation written and directed by Lawrence, who is also this year's 2017 NAACP Legacy Award-recipient.
"JD Lawrence presents Harriet, Rosa, and Me" is a show for everyone, in the soul stirring spirit of "Hidden Figures" and "Fences". The show takes place at a local city bus stop where a young lady named Hope decides to skip school to avoid a Black History exam she refused to study for. As she lets several buses pass without getting on them, she notices another young lady, Rosa, who is not getting on the bus as well, however for an entirely different reason. As the two make small talk, Rosa informs Hope who she is as well as the importance of Black History and why Hope should get on the bus. However, when Hope reluctantly rejects Rosa's candid advice, Hope decides to take the subway that's just feet away from the bus stop. As she leaves the bus depot, she comes face to face with Harriet, and is once again reminded of the importance of Black History, but this time the gloves are off as no-holds barred Harriet gives Hope a dose of reality. Will Hope get on the bus or will she let a life lesson pass her by? Get ready to be edu-tained in this historical and poignant presentation.
JD Lawrence, dubbed "The Man of Many Faces" by Ebony Magazine, has undeniably created a formula for success that no one at this present time can duplicate with as much ease or uncanny ability. Critics have called him everything from the best kept secret in theatre to undoubtedly the future of urban theatre, all of which prove true in "JD Lawrence's Harriet, Rosa, and Me".
