This spring, a handful of Rockland County's most stunning private outdoor spaces will be open to the public to enjoy for one day. The grounds and gardens on this tour are exquisitely landscaped and bedecked with summer kitchens, gazebos, pergolas, pools and fire places. Come see the fun and creative ways homeowners have found to bring the inside out and optimize their natural surroundings to entertain, relax and unwind.
Nestled into the river villages of Snedens Landing, Grandview and Nyack, the featured homes and grounds evoke the gentility and leisure pursuits of a bygone era in a variety of landscape architecture idioms from elegantly laid out formal gardens to wild spaces overlooking the river with an organic, artistic vibe. This charming, waterfront enclave has long provided a retreat from city life for such illustrious artists and style makers as Mikhail Baryshnikov (whose former home is included on the tour), Björk, Al Pacino, William Hurt, Rosie ODonnell and various Baldwin brothers. Properties are as divergently and ingeniously designed as a Queen Anne with a gracious wraparound porch perfect for high tea (and cocktail hour!) enveloped by an expansive lawn for croquet and badminton and a luxurious Gatsby-esque stone and slate patio that winds down to the Hudson river; to the expansive and bucolic grounds of renowned artist Grace Knowltons estate, once grazing pastures, now sculpture gardens showcasing her original work; to the home originally built by the award-winning childrens books illustrators, Berta and Elmer Hader, who fell instantly in love with the natural and rugged landscape of this majestic stone house on an old quarry site. The current owners, Mark and Lainie, cherish a copy of the book inspired by this property, The Little Stone House, in which Mrs. Doe dreamed of a house with a garden full of flowers.
This event is generously supported by our premier sponsors Weld Realty and D&D Tree & Landscaping and also by Green Mountain Energy, Steve Griggs Design, Jo Machinist Architect, Rockland Conservatory of Music, Solar Maximum, and Wright Bros. Real Estate. Reception fare courtesy of Rockland Roots.
