DREAMGIRLS ALLSTARS IN CONCERT - ONE NIGHT ONLY!
Memphis, Tennessee, Saturday, April 22nd at 7pm, The Memphis Black Arts Alliance launches with a bang what will become a year-long 35th Anniversary Celebration of preservation, celebration, and advancement of African American arts, literature and culture! For ONE NIGHT ONLY, MBAA will present the Full-Concert Version of the Broadway Smash Hit DREAMGIRLS at the magnificent new Guest House at Graceland, located at 3600 Elvis Presley Blvd.
I was approached by stage professional, Antonio Van King, one of our nations best stage performers, that hails from Chicago, about doing something extra special to commemorate the 35 years of charitable service that the Memphis Black Arts Alliance has offered to the Greater Memphis community. I knew it would be a huge undertaking, but I started making phone calls and was amazed at just how responsive all of these brilliant professional performers have been!, says Executive Director LarJuanette Williams who starred in the National Broadway Tour of Dreamgirls as Effie White and has since garnered several awards for reprisals.
The Memphis Black Arts Alliances concert version will include Antonio Van King as Curtis Taylor, Jr., New Yorks Topaza Watkins-Edmond as Lorrell Robinson, Orlando, FLs Charles Wesley Lattimore as James, Thunder Early, Broadway World winner Rainey Harris as Deena Jones, Broadway World winner Quinton Rayford as C.C. White, and of course, Broadway World winner LarJuanette Williams as Effie White. It also include music direction from the world-renown Ashley K. Davis, choreography from Broadway World winning choreographer Kellye Crawford, and lighting design by Broadway World winner Willis Eleby.
Dreamgirls All-Stars Concert will be a staged concert version of the Tony Award/Grammy Award winning Broadway production that premiered on the Great White Way in December 1981. Through a multitude of revivals, tours, regional stagings and the 2006 award winning motion picture adaptation, Dreamgirls has remained an audience favorite for more than three decades. Full of onstage joy and backstage drama, Dreamgirls tells the story of The Dreams, and up-and-coming 1960s girl singing group inspired by the career of Diana Ross and The Supremes as they experience the triumphs and tribulations that accompany their pursuit of fame and fortune in the music industry.
Dreamgirls, written by Tom Eyen with music by Henry Krieger features unforgettable hits such as And I Am Telling You Im Not Going, One Night Only, I Am Changing and the new Listen.
Williams adds, If there were a single show that I can honestly say built my career as a performing artists, this would be that show, and now I have the opportunity to present it with some of the best performers and production people I know right here in Memphis; What a treat!
