The story behind the show: Performer Jacqueline Ko has lived with the systemic neuroimmune disease Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), sometimes referred to as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), since age six. Despite the challenges of her illness, which left her bedbound for years, she has managed to become an award-winning singer and found a critically acclaimed opera and musical theatre company. She is committed to using her passion for music to help others, and since 2009 her benefit performances have raised over $38,000 in support of ME/CFS & FM treatment, education and research. Her story is featured in the new book Lighting Up a Hidden World: CFS and ME by Valerie Free.
What is Myalgic Myalgic Encephalomyelitis? Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), sometimes referred to as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), is a complex multi-system disease characterized by a severe worsening of symptoms after minimal exertion. It causes significant immune, neurological and autonomic abnormalities, with symptoms ranging from chronic pain and severe dizziness to intermittent dyslexia and memory loss. The illness affects around 40,000 people in BC and 28 million people worldwide, and studies report that moderate to severe cases of ME resemble living with late-stage cancer or congestive heart failure for decades. Despite this, the cause is still not known, the disease is seldom taught in medical school, and an estimated 84-91% of patients go undiagnosed. Find out more here.
What is Fibromyalgia? Fibromyalgia is a complex chronic illness that affects an estimated 60,000 people in BC and 2-4% of people worldwide. Characterized by widespread pain throughout the body, Fibromyalgia can also impair a sufferers joints or soft tissues and cause other debilitating symptoms such as neurological abnormalities, irregular heartbeat, irritable bowel syndrome and crushing fatigue unrelieved by sleep. As with ME/CFS, symptoms can vary not just from person to person but from day to day, and some sufferers may even appear healthy to the casual observer. Despite this, fibromyalgic pain can be severe and unrelenting, affecting all aspects of a persons daily life and often leading to significant disability. FInd out more here.
What is the ME/FM Society of BC? The ME/FM Society of BC is a registered BC charity working to support people with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) and Fibromyalgia (FM) throughout British Columbia. Their purpose is to educate, inform and increase awareness of ME and FM within the healthcare community, government and public; to provide information, support and advocacy for patients and their families; and to promote state-of-the-art medical research, testing, diagnosis and treatments.
