A Night of Gypsy Music and Dance
The Eminence Dance Studio proudly presents performance by Vadim and Marina Kolpakov.
Romani or as it's mostly known around the world - the Gypsy music and dance has been known in Europe for many centuries, the world famous musicians that you probably heard such as the Gypsy Kings of the Spanish pop flamenco culture, the legendary Django Reinhardt from the French Gypsy jazz tradition, or Nikolai Slichenko and the Moscow's Romen Theater in Russia where Vadim comes from.
Vadim Kolpakov is one of the most prominent Russian-Romany (Gypsy) seven-string guitar virtuoso in the world, dancer and vocalist, he represents this culture around the globe. A graduate of the Romani performing arts school Gilori, Vadim studied guitar with his uncle and mentor Alexander Kolpakov in Moscow. At the age of 15, Vadim joined the Moscow Romen Gypsy Theater as a guitarist, vocalist, dancer and dramatic actor. Since then, Vadim has performed extensively in Russia and abroad; he has given concerts in Carnegie Hall (New York City) as well as in the Kremlin (Moscow). He has participated in numerous musical projects on Russian, Canadian, European and American television and radio. He was an artist-in-residence at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2006-2007. In 2008-2009, Vadim Kolpakov went on tour with Madonna as a performer in her Sticky & Sweet world tour. He is the founder and artistic director of the US-based ensemble Via Romen, member of the Kolpakov Trio (Russia), and also performs with several duo projects with various musicians.
Marina Kolpakova is a professional dancer, choreographer and instructor, originally from Estonia. Marina specializes in Flamenco, Latin and Russian-Romany (Gypsy) dances. She has performed around the world in Russia, Estonia, Spain, Finland, Canada and the US. Since moving to the US she has taught and performed with the Carolinas Latin Dance Company, participated with the Charlotte Salsa Dance Company and Argentinean Tango Society, and created choreographies for companies such as Opera Carolina and others. Currently Marina performs as a soloist, as well as with Vadim and with the ensemble Via Romen, and teaches in her private studio and at the Russian school in Charlotte, NC.
