New Helsinki w/ Creosote Jazz Collective
Monterey Court is pleased to welcome from Brooklyn N.Y., Olli Hirvonen, the 2016 winner of the Socar Montreux Jazz Electric Guitar Competition and his band New Helsinki to the Monterey Court stage for one night only. OLLI HIRVONEN (http://www.ollihirvonen.com/ [3]) is a Finnish electric guitarist currently based in Brooklyn, NY. Fluent in various styles from jazz to rock to more experimental sounds, he has formed a highly unique style combining these different influences. Aside from winning the Montreux competition, his accolades include being chosen as the Artist of The Year of Pori Jazz Festival in 2011, and serving as the Performer of The Year 2014-2015 for the Finlandia Foundation. Hirvonen has appeared in various recordings, and released his own debut album "Detachment" in April 2014. He holds degrees from Manhattan School of Music and Sibelius Academy.
New Helsinki is a new group put together by Hirvonen to perform his original jazz compositions, combining influences from his Nordic roots with the energy of rock, and the swing of modern American jazz. The group features Hirvonen on guitar, Luke Marantz on piano and keyboards, Marty Kenney on bass, and Nathan Ellman-Bell on drums. They are releasing their debut album in 2017, featuring Walter Smith III on saxophone and Adam O'Farrill on trumpet.
