Science Matters
To celebrate our Ten Year Anniversary at Imagine Science Films, we are celebrating our 2nd edition of our monthly series Science Matters. The purpose is to foster a consistent, active dialogue between scientists and filmmakers year round. This month's theme is conservation and women in science.
We are very thrilled to welcome back ISF friend Emily V. Driscoll to Bowery Poetry Club where she will be screening her film BRILLIANT DARKNESS: Hotaru In The Night. The short film explores efforts to save fireflies and nocturnal habitats in Japan and the United States. The film considers the challenges, implications and significance of night and its crucial role in animal biology and life cycles.
Followed by 'Breakthrough: Snapshots from Afar' - the second episode of Science Friday and HHMI's series "Breakthrough: Portraits of Women in Science,". The film features three scientists behind India's first interplanetary missiona mission to Mars. With limited time and budget to design and launch the satellitecalled MOM (for Mars Orbiter Mission)Seetha Somasundaram, Nandini Harinath, and Minal Rohit spent long hours in the clean room, followed by tense and exciting moments tracking the satellite as it entered Mars's orbit. Their efforts helped India become the first nation to successfully reach the Red Planet on its first attempt.
Emily is a documentary producer and the founder of BonSci Films, a production company specializing in science and art documentaries. Her award-winning documentaries have aired on PBS stations and screened at museums, film festivals, theaters and universities in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Recent films include 'ShellShocked', 'Invisible Ocean', 'Brilliant Darkness' and 'Masterpiece in a Mill Town'. She produces short films for Science Friday as well as the Museum of the City of New York, Spectrum News, The Fitchburg Art Museum, NBC Mobile, and artnet.
