About the performance: Modes are unifocal movement structures for exploring the creative potential and truth of the dancing body. Modes align concept and movement to create/reveal relationship lines, vivid structures, and to support fully embodied performance. In a sense, the dancer generates an energy field where she is danced. Of Modes!, an ongoing, multi-layered performance and exhibition project that summarizes of Modal Practice, the improvisational methodology that has been the backbone of Merián Soto's creative and somatic investigation for more than 20 years.
Modes! explores effective methods for sharing improvisational performance. Through digital media, the primary act of improvisational performance and practice is re-envisioned as a work of art; the performance moment is captured as art object available in real time, as opposed to theatrical time, releasing this work from the limitations of theatrical conventions.
Modes! captures brilliant modal performances by Philadelphia, New York, Puerto Rico and Beijing based artists including Noemí Segarra, Jumatatu Poe, Marion Ramírez, Beau Hancock, Olive Prince, Maria Bauman, Muyu Yuan, and Long Cheng.
