George Orwell's "1984"
Tuesday, April 4 at 7 pm, we will present George Orwell's 1984, starring John Hurt. Over 90 art house movie theaters across the country in 79 cities and in 34 states, plus one location in Canada, will be participating collectively in a NATIONAL EVENT DAY screening of the 80's movie. This date was chosen because it's the day George Orwell's protagonist Winston Smith begins rebelling against his government by keeping a forbidden diary.
Written in 1948, Orwell's literary masterpiece takes place after the atomic war, where the world is divided into three states. London is a city in Oceania, ruled by a party who has total control over all its citizens. Winston Smith (John Hurt) is one of the bureaucrats, rewriting history in one of the departments. One day he commits the crime of falling in love with Julia. They try to escape Big Brother's listening and viewing devices, but, of course, nobody can really escape.
Tickets are $7.00 general admission and available online and at the theater box office starting at 6 pm prior to the movie. This film is rated R and no one under the age of 17 will be admitted without parent or guardian. Run time is 1 hour and 53 minutes.
The Plaza Playhouse Theater is at 4916 Carpinteria Ave. in Carpinteria and is ADA compatible and wheelchair accessible. There is plenty of free parking near the venue.
