Damien Echols, Life After Death
Former death row inmate Damien Echols discusses his memoir, Life After Death, with Chicago Magazine's Selena  Fragassi.

In 1993, eighteen year-old Echols was sentenced to death and wrongfully convicted for the gruesome murders of three eight year-old boys in West Memphis, Arkansas along with Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, Jr.  The teenagers came to be known as the "West Mempis Three" and their alleged crime the "Robin Hood Hills Murders."

Over the next two decades, the case became known worldwide as a symbol of wrongful conviction and imprisonment.  HBO released an award-winning three-part documentary series, "Paradise Lost."  Bands and artists like Henry Rollins and Pearl Jam collaborated with Echols or donated album proceeds to their legal defense fund.  And now, Amy J. Berg and Lord of the Rings director, Peter Jackson, debuted a second documentary, "West of Memphis," at this year's Sundance Festival.  Additionally, production has recently started on "Devil's Knot," starring Academy Award winners Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon, based on the best-selling book of the same name by investigative journalist Mara Leveritt.

In a shocking turn of events, all three men were released in August 2011 in an agreement with the state of Arkansas known as the Alford plea. Now Echols shares his story in full - from prison staff to portraits of fellow inmates and the deplorable living conditions, to the incredible reserves of perseverance that kept him alive and sane while incarcerated for nearly two decades.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Damien Echols was born in 1974 and grew up in Mississippi, Tennessee, Maryland, Oregon, and Arkansas.  At age eighteen, he was arrested and along with two others, charged with the deaths of three boys. Echols received a death sentence and spent almost eighteen years on Death Row, until he and the two others were released in 2011. Echols is the author of a self-published memoir titled "Almost Home."  An exhibition of artwork he completed while in prison will take place at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the fall of 2012.  He and his wife, Lorri Davis live in New York City.
