"Citizen Science and the California Coastal BioBlitz"
As part of the Living Oceans exhibit join our guests from the California Academy of Sciences - Rebecca F. Johnson, PhD and Alison Young and learn how you too can help research by becoming a Citizen Scientist.
As co Managers of the Citizen Science Program at the California Academy of Sciences, the "dynamic duo" are building and facilitating a community of naturalists working together to discover nature, in special places and in their everyday lives. They work with a team of volunteers to discover, document and monitor invertebrates and seaweeds in the intertidal habitats of central California, primarily along the Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo coasts.
Citizen science is an excellent way to:
Involve people everywhere directly in research and in answering some of the most pressing questions of our time. Build natural history skills. Connect people to the natural world (and each other). Help strengthen our sense of place. Foster stewardship. Build community.
The California Coastal BioBlitz is statewide effort to document our coastal biodiversity and a series of bioblitzes are held up and down the California Coast, focusing on intertidal zones in marine protected areas (MPAs. Working together with the MPA Collaborative Network and other partners to create a "snapshot" in time of where species are located along our coast.
Light refreshments will be served and the galleries will be open to all guests.
