Portland Singer-Songwriter Marie Schumacher
Award-winning songwriter, vocalist, guitarist, and pianist Marie Schumacher & the West Coast Players will be performing at Subterranean Art House (2179 Bancroft Way, Berkeley) on Friday, November 9th, 8:30 10:30. Bay Area singer-songwriter Andrea Hurley opens the show. Tickets: $10-20; doors open at 8:00 pm.
Last year, Marie released her fourth CD of original music, which integrates Latin jazz, R&B, modern rock, and Americana elements into her lyrical, finely-crafted songs. This latest recording, Island Set Aflame, explores the themes of light and heat as sources of creativity, wisdom, and alienation. The depth and range Schumacher possesses is startling and sure to garner notice. The versatility of the songs themselves ranges from blues to folk to alt-country/roots, all encompassed by the pop umbrella. This seemingly complex approach is not only easy on the ears; it shows true, pure talent to write beyond genre boundaries. Fans of the Pretenders, Cowboy Junkies, Aimee Mann, Norah Jones, Mary Chapin-Carpenter, and Marianne Faithful will be pleased to hear such an exciting and polished songwriter for the first time. ~ Heidi Drockelman, IndieMusic.com
While her recordings are consistently beautiful and strong, Marie's live shows are more visceral, backed by a masterful band that adds layers of lush textures while grooving with the best of them. Marie speaks as well as she sings and provides thoughtfully funny commentary on her life and work.
The West Coast Players are: Steve Gibson (Jolly Gibsons, Kevin Beadles Band) on electric guitar, Steven Patton (Andrew's Ave.) on keys and vocals, Aaron Elliott (Andrew's Ave.) on electric bass and backing vocals, and Jon Arkin (Bill Chaplin, Randy Porter, Albino!) on drums and percussion.
