The Watsons Go to Birmingham, 1963
Christopher Paul Curtis's novel, winner of the Newbery Honor and the Coretta Scott King Honor, intertwines the often hilarious fictional account of an African American family with the shattering violent factual events of the summer of 1963 in Birmingham, Alabama. Ten-year-old Kenny Watson chronicles the events of a fateful summer for his family, the Watsons of Flint, Michigan. There's Kenny, Momma, Dad, little sister Joetta and teenage brother Byron, who can't seem to stay out of trouble. Concerned about the budding juvenile delinquent in their family, Momma and Dad decide it's time for Byron to have a lengthy stay with strict Grandma Sands in Birmingham, Alabama. The whole family piles into the Brown Bomber and heads southtoward a horrific moment in American history: the bombing of the Sixteenth Avenue Baptist Church during which four young black girls are killed. Using humor and a childs view of the world, Curtiss novel conveys the real strength of family love and endurance even in the face of adversity.
