Intersections of Art and Life: A Conversation between Julie Chen and Lois Morrison, moderated by Sandra Kroupa
Book Artists Julie Chen and Lois Morrison have been friends for 40 years and have worked together on three artists' book collaborations over the past 30 years including their most recent work: A Recuerdo for Ste. Ostrich, published earlier this year. Under the guidance of moderator Sandra Kroupa, Book Arts & Rare Book Curator at the University of Washington, they will speak about their parallel careers in book art and the ways in which their collaborations and lifelong friendship has affected their creative work over the years.

Please stay for a light reception and additional conversation following this presentation.

Julie Chen is an internationally known book artist who has been publishing limited edition artists books under the Flying Fish Press imprint for over 30 years. Her work can be found in numerous collections worldwide including the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the Sir George Grey Special Collections, Auckland, NZ. In 2009 she was a featured artist in the PBS television series, Craft in America. She is a professor of book art at Mills College in Oakland, California.

Lois Morrisons books, both fabric and paper, are in collections both here and abroad---The Tate Gallery, The Victoria and Albert, The Bibliotheque Nationaleand in museums and libraries in the United States, Canada and new Zealand. She has been producing both paper and fabric books for more than 30 years, but her end game is dedicated to fabric books.  As someone from a fabric background-quilts, trapunto-the fabric books have always been a central focus; the paper ones are a way of making her work more accessible-multiples are affordable.  A recuerdo for St.Ostrich is her third collaboration with Julie Chen.

Sandra Kroupa is the Book Arts and Rare Book Curator in Special Collections at the University of Washington Libraries where she has worked for over 48 years.  Sandra writes, lectures, teaches classes, curates exhibitions and gives workshops on topics related to the book arts, both historical and modern, and many other topics related to collections in Special Collections.  She has apprenticed to a bookbinder, owns two letterpresses and takes as many workshops and specialized courses as possible to better assist students in understanding book history and creating their own books. She has curated more than 50 exhibitions, written for a number of exhibition catalogs & journals & provided introductions to several anthologies.  She participates in the UWs PhD program in Textual Studies and regularly team teaches in the iSchool as well as teaching for a number of departments on campus.
