HUSH: Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde
Dinner and a Movie at Saloon & The Rockwell. First Wednesday of each month. Start your evening with a Two course dinner with drink pairings, then step down the hall from Saloon and step back in time at HUSH, our silent film with live original music series.
HUSH and step back to a time before television, during the advent of the automobile, and before the urbanization of America. Once home to 14 theaters, Somerville was the most densely populated city in the country, and going to the movies was a social experience where people came together to share news, gossip and be entertained. A century later we celebrate the art of silent film with live, original music performed by Noxaphonic, curated by Erica Baptiste and presented by The Rockwell.
Wednesday, March 1st, 7:30PM Film(doors 7:00PM) Dinner begins at 5:00PM
Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde, a 1920 American silent horror film directed by John S. Robertson and starring John Barrymore is based on the hit novel The strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde written by Robert Louis Stevenson. Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde is a story of a scientist (played by Barrymore) with a split personality who believes that every man has two sides, one good and one evil. Dr. Jekyll creates a potion or drug that physically transforms him into another character under the name of Mr. Hyde, whos hideous exterior parallels the evil he wreaks through the town. Barrymore who was known as a famous, romantic stage actor at the time, had previously held many other major roles but it was his iconic performance in this film that transformed him into a movie star. The early sequences of Jekylls transformation into Hyde was achieved without makeup, camera trickery or cutting, instead relying only on Barrymores mastery of facial expressions and ability to distort his appearance. This famous and classic story has had dozens of renditions since the novel was released in 1886 however the version you will see tonight is one of the most successful of them all.
