Swamp Stomp 10 with Waco Brothers, The Sadies, Eric Ambel, Al Scorch
Roots Hoot House Concerts is pleased to once again present what we continue to believe is the best under the radar music event in Southeastern New England, Swamp Stomp. Swamp Stomp 10 will happen on Saturday, July 8 at our usual West Kingston, R.I. location near the entrance to The Great Swamp. In celebration of our long-standing booking of Bloodshot records artists, this year's event will be Bloodshot-centric featuring all current or former bands/artists on the label and in the spirit of some of the label's famed parties at Yard Dog in Austin at SXSW to the CMJ party years. Featured performers this year are:
WACO BROTHERS (Chicago, IL) THE SADIES (Ontario, CN) ERIC AMBEL BAND (New York, NY) AL SCORCH (Chicago, IL)
We will also welcome back poster artist extraordinaire Pete Cardoso from Ghost-Town Design (www.ghost-town.net) who will once again be creating a commemorative poster for the event.
Swamp Stomp is a BYO-everything event from beverages to food to whatever turns you on and enjoy what promises to a hot day of rock & roll at a beautiful property situated in the swampy, backwoods of West Kingston, RI. Grounds will open at 1:30 PM on the day of the event with music beginning at 3:00 pm and continuing until 9 pm or so. Additional information for Swamp Stomp 10 can be obtained by contacting Roots Hoot House Concerts via email at rootshoot@cox.net or by phone at 401-965-0833. Tickets are available at Brown Paper Tickets.
HISTORY of SWAMP SWAMP: Begun in 2008, Swamp Stomp has brought the likes of The Sadies, Bottle Rockets, Valerie June, Lydia Loveless, Ha Ha Tonka, The Yawpers, Water Liars, JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound, T-Model Ford, JP Harris & The Tough Choices, Laura Cantrell, Amy LaVere, Steve Wynn & the Miracle 3, Joe Fletcher & the Wrong Reasons, The Silks, Toy Soliders, Patrick Sweany, Girls on Grass, Cordero, Dollar Store, Smith & Weeden, and Shacklehands to its beautiful locale in the wilds of West Kingston. Put simply, a GREAT and VERY COOL event.
A little about this years performers: THE WACO BROTHERS (Chicago, IL) (Bloodshot Records) http://www.wacobrothers.com/ https://youtu.be/Yl9fed8ZMy0 https://youtu.be/Yl9fed8ZMy0 The Waco Brothers have been standing at the corner of punk urgency and Three-Chords-And-The-Truth country for 20 years now. They started at a time when it was deemed patently absurd to mix the two types of music, but the Wacos knew the score; they are different sides of the same coin, the personal wrapped in the political. And instead of travelling calculated creative boulevards during their career, the Waco Brothers have explored dark alleys and winding gravel paths through nine releases, all with the headlights off and the pedal to the metal, worrying (or not worrying) about end results later. With a body of work known for the indelicate and raucous, this may be their most deliberate and punchy yetno ones more dangerous than a man with nothing to lose. With an improbable longevity, an impeccable rock and roll resume, and a go-for-broke live personae that can distract from the sharpness of their subject matters, it can be easy to take the Wacos for granted. But what was true at the beginning of the siege remains so today: in these fraught times, no ones out there writing and performing with the political and personal so intertwined. Like a strange, colorful and possibly poisonous toad that lies dormant in the mud of an Amazonian rain forest, only to emerge when it seems like its necessary, the Waco Brothers are back, and, perhaps, we need them now more than ever.
THE SADIES (Toronto, ON) (Yep Roc Records) http://thesadies.net https://youtu.be/SqYWl49j6GE https://youtu.be/BGpmYmjLc7Y https://youtu.be/uECM1pwq03c (about new album)
Formed in Toronto in 1994, The Sadies have released 10 studio albums including 2017s Northern Passages which PopMatters describes as an amalgamation of Nuggets-era garage rock, classic country, and on rarer occasions even allowing tinges of rockabilly to sink in.. They have also released two albums with Andre Williams (1999s Red Dirt and 2012s Night and Day), an album with Jon Langford (2003s Mayors of the Moon),an album with Neko Case (2004s The Tigers Have Spoken) and an album with John Doe (2009s Country Club). Country Club went on to chart on Billboards U.S. Country and Indie charts and reached #10 on the U.S. Heatseekers chart. A Swamp Stomp favorite, this will be the bands third appearance at the festival.
ERIC AMBEL (New York, NY) http://ericambel.com/ https://youtu.be/spA2WqnuBaI https://youtu.be/7DEmZXJApu0
The veteran singer/guitarist/songwriter/producer Eric Ambel known to his friends, associates and bandmates as Roscoe has spent the past three and a half decades building a powerful body of raw, personally charged music thats earned him a far-reaching reputation as a rock n roll original, while keeping him busy in his parallel careers as producer, sideman and collaborator. A deeply committed rocker as well as a thoughtful, crafty songwriter, Ambel has made enduring music as a solo artist and as a member of the Del-Lords, the Yayhoos and countless incarnations of his own legendary combo Roscoes Gang. His fiery, inventive guitar work has graced landmark albums by everyone from Steve Earle to Joan Jett to Run-DMC. And his production skills have enlivened recordings by a wide range of artists from across the musical spectrum. But its in his own uncompromising albums that Ambels unmistakable rock n roll vision shines brightest. Lakeside whose title namechecks the Lakeside Lounge, the beloved bar and music venue which Ambel co-owned and operated in New Yorks East Village from 1996 until 2012, when it became the victim of skyrocketing rents and rampant gentrification shares its namesakes gritty honesty and lack of pretense.
AL SCORCH (Chicago, IL) (Bloodshot Records) http://www.alscorch.com/ https://youtu.be/7zMiF2ZYS6Q https://youtu.be/wo5CUZ2PFDg Balanced on wedges of punk, old-time string band, American and European folk, and soulful balladry, Al Scorch is an entertainer, road warrior, storyteller, and one helluva musician. His second album and Bloodshot debut Circle Round the Signs is built on a sonic framework sharing an intersection with the Bad Livers lawless next-gen take on traditional country & bluegrass, and Black Flags burn-it-all-down revolt and breakneck tempos.
SWAMP STOMP is an 18-and-over event and please, no pets. It will again be a BYOB/picnic event (i.e., bring whatever youd like to eat or drink). All we ask is that you carry out whatever you brought in.
Event Do's & Don'ts: DO's & DON'T's: First off, the location is a fairly large and sprawling yard. DO bring your own chairs & blankets if you prefer to sit in the yard & listen to the bands. People will most likely be standing in the stage area. DO bring your own provisions: food & drink and whatever cups, utensils, plates, etc. you may need. We are not supplying anything. DO bring something to cart your garbage & bottles/cans out at the end of the event. Absolutely DO bring your own mosquito repellent. It gets VERY buggy late in the day. We recommend a flashlight as the road will be pretty dark when the show ends. If possible, DO carpool as parking is on the road only.
