Phil Wiggins and The Chesapeake Sheiks plus opening act Jim Lloyd at The Blue Ridge Music Center
The Blue Ridge Music Center presents a night of Piedmont Blues, African-American String Band and Early Swing featuring Phil Wiggins and The Chesapeake Sheiks with opening act Jim Lloyd.
The formation of the Phil Wiggins & The Chesapeake Sheiks was inspired by hearing and playing with great songsters like Nat Reese, Howard Armstrong, The Mississippi Sheiks, The Big Three Trio and others. The Chesapeake Sheiks play Blues from the Piedmont and Delta as well as the music of Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt, Louis Jordan, Slim and Slam, and others.
DC native, champion of the Piedmont blues style, and acoustic harp player Phil Wiggins has spent much of his career playing with guitarist John Cephas. With Cephas death, Wiggins has begun to stretch out the groupings and style of his performances, including playing with Corey Harris, Nat Reese, and (in Reeses honor for reminding Wiggins how great the black string and swing bands of the 20s, 30s and 40s were), this current aggregation - The Chesapeake Sheiks. [The Shieks] swinging their way through such great songs as 'Struttin With Some Barbecue', 'Lulus Back In Town', and one that could be the groups theme, 'Dont Let That Music Die'. - Dave Rogers, WTJU 91.1 Charlottesville
The Chesapeake Sheiks are: Phil Wiggins (harmonica) Steve Wolf (acoustic bass), Ian Walters (piano), Matt Kelly (acoustic guitar), Marcus Moore (violin) plus special guest Baakari Wilder, tap dancer extraordinaire.

Raised in the coalfields of western Virginia, Jim Lloyd now makes his home in Rural Retreat, Va., where he operates Lloyds Barber Shop, a local gathering spot for collecting and trading tunes, stories, and songs. His musical roots extend back through at least four generations of fiddlers, guitar players, dancers, and singers from the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia. Jim is known especially for his skills on guitar and banjo. Through the influences of his extended family and fortunate upbringing in the Heart of Traditional Mountain Music, Jim has old bones with a knowledge and appreciation for the old ways well beyond his years.
