Sheng, Xis husband, had a throat incision due to severe myelitis and depends on a resuscitator to survive. Xis ex-boyfriend Fugui brought up the idea of a self-built resuscitator driven by bicycle to replace the manual resuscitator that needs to be pressed by other villagers all day round, 18-21 times per minute. Such idea is strongly opposed by Zhuzi who lent 20,000 to Xi and asked the Chief to promise that Xi would marry him after Sheng dies. Nonetheless, in order to pay up hospital bills, the Chief and Xi approached to Fugui to borrow another 20,000 and made the same promise. Sheng is dying while the resuscitator being built, each and every villager, including Zhuzi, Fugui, Chief and Shengs mother, has been weighing the pros and cons of helping others.
