Promises to Keep: Environmental Racism
The Snohomish County Communities of Color Coalition (C3) is a non-partisan group of citizens who share common goals of pressing community issues. C3, problem-solves and advocates for social justice, cultural and religious respect and human rights, especially for people of color and other under-represented groups.
Our major areas of concern include but are not limited to the elimination of personal and institutional racism; equal access to and opportunities in education; equal access to and opportunities in economic development and employment; and fair and equal treatment under the law and in our society.
The 6th Annual North Puget Sound Conference on Race will be sponsored by the Communities of Color Coalition working in concert with Everett Community College, the Snohomish County Chapter of the NAACP, YWCA, WSU, Edmonds Community College, and additional community partners. This years conference will be on Saturday April 22, 2017 at Everett Community College.
Previous conference presentations themes have included Labor, Law and Justice, Health, Housing, and Food. This years topics will focus on Environmental Racism and will address three of the areas necessary to influence the environment of Snohomish County families of color:
Education how to change the power, beginning with the individual
Community Awareness get each to stop thinking in isolation but rather collectively for a common good
Community Organizing what are the organizing tools and skills youth needing to stimulate change
The keynote speaker will be Deborah Parker, former Vice Chair of the Tulalip Tribes Board of Directors, legislative policy analyst and a strong voice for combatting violence against indigenous women. She is perhaps best known for her role securing the passage of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), with its increased protections for indigenous women. The 2013 reauthorization of VAWA took important steps forward in increasing tribal authority in prosecuting domestic and sexual violence abusers, allowing for the first time prosecution of non-tribal abusers in tribal courts.
The conference will also feature artist and speaker Matika Wilbur, who is a Swinomish/Tulalip member and an award-winning photographer from Washington. She is currently photographing members of all 567 federally recognized tribes in the United States as part of her Project 562. She has exhibited in Canada, the United States, France, and Russia. Opening the conference will be Nikkita Oliver, a Seattle-based creative teaching artist and anti-racism organizer.
The conference will include two breakout sessions with 4 sequential panels focused on the following topics: Empowering, Engaging, and Equipping. Discussion groups led by presenters will follow each panel.
A core purpose of this conference is to provide information and opportunities for improvement of the communities that we live in.
C3s hope is to create a community of color that supports our participants returning to their communities better connected, informed, and prepared by facilitating conversations and actions regarding racism, intolerance, and linguistic barriers that have an impact on our vision and treatment of each other.
This free event is open to the public and includes a full healthy lunch. Donations are acceptable to C3, a 501 (c) 3 organization.
