SCHEHERAZADE, TELL ME A STORY - FUNDRAISER
The film screening is a fundraising event to support community services provided by Turning Point, a non-profit organization, to Muslim women and children who are victims of domestic violence and child abuse in New York City. As noted by the executive director of Turning Point Robina Niaz, "domestic violence transcends culture and religion and is stigmatized and under-reported in all communities. However, for the Muslim community, this issue is compounded even further by racial profiling, hate crimes and forced detentions, making many in our community fearful of accessing services from mainstream organizations."
This event also aims to serve as a campaign for the use and role of films/cinematography as a contributor to increasing awareness of global issues.
Yousry Nasrallah's Scheherazade, Tell Me A Story is about a female talk show host who researches and discusses women's stories that reveal the human condition of women in Egypt. Well acted and with a script that gives a very clear depiction on how power operates in Egypt, Scheherazade Tell Me A Storya Box Office success in Egyptspeaks to the world of dissent in Islamic-oriented societies.
