A six week course that will explore our relationship to the 5 elements: water, earth, metal, fire, air/wind. We will use techniques derived from the ancient practices of Qi Gong and Tai Chi, and the contemporary art of Butoh, to initiate new ways of moving and being. Building on this we will create innovative choreographies and text.
According to ancient Chinese Medicine our internal organs and emotions are linked to each element. The Chinese doctor endeavours to find a balance of these elemental qualities in the body. Good health is related to having these energies balanced. Throughout the course you will be given simple tools to help you find that equilibrium. Centering and grounding are two vital tools that allow us to explore with more freedom and security. Each session will include warm up techniques, meditation in movement, voice work, and much more. Then exploring the rhythm and movement of the elements we will create text, scenes & choreographies which are creative responses to that raw material.
As well as using the inspiring improvisational techniques of Butoh, which draws on the elements, and allows us to access profound levels of our being: We will also look at movement styles from Kung Fu, Capoera, African Dance and how these can support our personal movement explorations. And we will engage in some very energetic trance dances, so make sure you have loose comfortable clothes to move in.

Facilitator - Derek Bowerman
I am 53 years old and have worked and trained in theatre and dance for many years. I spent about 15 years working and touring in Spain and have worked as a facilitaor, actor, performer and director, at La Galeria Arte Elemental (centre for self development through the arts) in Andalucia for 3 years. I worked with several professional companies in Spain and in 2004 formed my own company, L-Vital, which made performances about local and national issues using theatre, dance (particularly flamenco), comedy, and much more. My experience is rich and informed by the variety contexts in which I have worked, including: prisons, youth clubs, community centres, theatres, festivals, doing street performance, and in artistic-spiritual-communities. I look forward to sharing this process and knowledge with you.
