Dance Shelter 2017
"showcases a slew of burgeoning talent . . . every bit as audacious, complex, and unusual as audiences have come to expect" (Matt de La Pena, SeeChicagoDance.com)
Potent contemporary dance works by 4 risk-taking choreographers take the stage in Dance Shelter 2017 (produced by the Chicago Moving Company).
On the bill are:
"Gravity Falls" a premiere work-in-progress by Bessie Award-winning dance artist, Timothy Buckley. "Although his virtuosity often takes the form of tumbles and staggers and knots when his limbs stray from their plotted path, he's no slapstick comedian" (Jowitt, Village Voice); Buckley's "Gravity Falls" is at once a celebration of 'gravitas' (a virtue associated with weight, seriousness, dignity, and substance) and a dance examining the wonder of momentum, mass, and velocity in human motion. "Mobius/3" (performed by the Chicago Moving Company)---a site-specific work, at once lyrical and redolent, by Japanese choreographer Saiko Kino (recipient of the prestigious Yokohama Art Prize); "Mobius" was originally conceived in Tottori and Tokyo, Japan and has been re-envisioned for Chicago's Hamlin Park Theater.
And new works by noted experimentalists/CMC Artists in Residence: Rachel Bunting/The Humans and Ayako Kato/Art Union Humanscape. Bunting, "a mad scientist of dance, whose inguenuity is ever teetering on the edge of brilliance" (Warnekce, Art Intercepts), continues her surreal, stupendous grappling with the modern and natural world--while Kato's "Tuning" is a sound and movement collaboration (exquisite as usual) featuring live music by Peter Maunu on Thursday (guitar, violin, mandolin) and both Maunu and Jason Roebke (double bass) on Friday.
all 4 works are performed each night
Perfomers include: Rachel Bunting, Bryan Robert Hinkle, Precious Jennings, Ayako Kato.
Collaobrators: Music - Kumiko Yabu (gamelan/percussion) and Yuta Yokoyama (trumpet), original score for "Mobius" (recorded); Peter Maunu (guitar, violin, mandolin)/Thurs/Fri "Tuning" live performance; Jason Roebke (double bass)/Fri "Tuning" live performance. Lighting - Jacob Snodgrass.
